JOB TITLE: DEPUTY LABORATORY (LAB) MANAGER
DEPARTMENT: PATHOLOGY
REPORTS TO: DIRECTOR, CLINICAL SERVICES
JOB SUMMARY
Reporting to the Director, of Clinical Services at the unit level and professionally to the Lab Manager, the Deputy Lab Manager is responsible for the delivery of laboratory services in an efficient and effective manner. The candidate will manage the Core Lab area (Hematology, Chemistry, Parasitology, Serology, Microbiology and Phlebotomy) to include staff planning and evaluation, budget planning and monitoring with input from the Chief Pathologist and Lab Manager.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manages Core Lab areas (Hematology, Chemistry, Microbiology and Phlebotomy) by providing leadership to the team to provide quality lab services in an efficient manner;
- Responsible for staff recruitment, staff planning, development of duty rotas, leave planning and staff evaluation including orientation and training of new staff;
- Communicating frequently with the procurement department on establishing reordering levels, consumables and budget of this area;
- Oversees and performs preventive maintenance and troubleshooting on the laboratory instruments. Reports problems and discrepancies to the Chief Pathologist and Lab Manager;
- Maintains a safe environment in accordance with standards, policies and safety regulations according to the current and latest Safe care standards;
- Control the departmental budget within the agreed parameters by ensuring efficient utilization of resources are used to maximum effect and take charge of stock control.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
- Degree or Diploma in Medical Laboratory Sciences
- Certificate/Training in Quality Systems
- Minimum 3 years experience in hospital lab management
- Demonstrated leadership in planning and implementing change
- Demonstrated knowledge of ISO 15189 Quality Standards
- Demonstrated excellence in facilitation, communication, team building and problem-solving skills
- Be familiar and experienced with the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), in terms of application and utilization
